Back from Taiwan

Just back from Taiwan today, man, it was a tiring trip.
It is not easy to babysit 7 adults.
But hey, we had fun.

Too tired now to write about details of the trip.
Let me take a night off (tmr have to go back to offic, darn it), sort out the pics and put something up soon.
After all, I have almost whole of next week to do this.

Nights everyone :)

I'm Back

Hi People,

It has been some time since I last blog. No, I have not fallen down the corner of the tiny red dot that I stay.

The fact is I was addicted to Facebook which is sucking up my time looking and adding friends (you'll be amazed by the people you happen to come by - I found a few of my lost Secondary and Uni mates), throwing cows (and whatever) at my friends, playing "Scissor, Paper, Stone" and Scarbulous (aka Scribble in the real world).

I finally understand why my friends' wise greetings were "welcome, FB is really addictive". I think I sort of gotten over the craze for me. (maybe except for Scarbulous). But hey, if you see me on Facebook, do add me , drop me a message and challenge me to a game or two.

Except to see more of me around on blogger.

Adios.

Happy Birthday to Kim!!!!

Kim Lost in Transit

Today is the birthday of one of my best friends, known him since Sec1. He is a good buddy you can always rely on.

Celebrated the day at a yummy Korean restaurant (Manna) with Kim (the STAR), Guocan and Vincent.
It is always nice to catch up with old school friends. Amazing that we are still in touch after so many years. I guess it is true that friendship during secondary school days are the purest! :D

HAPPY BIRTHDAY KIM!!!
May your wings guide you through a great career ^^V

THANKS EVERYONE, it was a lovely evening.

Okie... I'm camera shy... -_-;

My cake, my cake ^^

Out of the Blue, the wonderful people gathered @Hog's Breath CHIJMES to celebrate L.'s birthday ^^

It's interesting how things like a familiar face, a true smile, simple greetings between friends can bring so much warmth to the heart.

I guess when friends gather the warmth of each person is mixed, shared and this spreads to everyone.

Thanks everyone, it was a lovely evening.

Bleed Month

Okie.. I have to confess - I spend to much this month. And to make things worst, it is only the start of the month o.O

Let's do a count of the stuff, I bought this month (so far)....

Number 4...
Origin: Comex 07

External SATA HDD Casing - $25

Number 3...
Origin: VR-ZONE Forum

Vintage NDS Lite w R4 + 1GB MicroSD Card - $250

Number 2...
Origin: Comex 07

Hanns.G 19" LCD Monitor (gift for my bro) - $270

Number 1...
Origin: Comex 07

Acer Aspire 4520G Lappy - $1348
Specification:
  • 14.1" LCD
  • AMD Turion 64x2 Mobile Technology TL64 (2.2 GHz, 2 x 512 KB L2 cache)
  • Up to 896MB NVIDIA Gefore8400M G TurboCache (128MB dedicated)
  • 2 GB DDR2 RAM
  • 160 GB HDD
  • DVD Super Multi-DL
  • 802.11b/g WLAN
  • Bluetooth2.0 + EDR
  • Built-in speaker, mic, webcam
Law thots: A very good buy of cost vs specs for a desktop replacement lappy. Yup, it is on AMD - but hey I am an AMD supporter (my past few rigs were AMDs). And yes, it is Acer, but hey it is still a company and most importantly it is cheap and has a 1 year warranty.

Total Spending for Sept (to-date): $1893

Darn, all these are bleeding my pockets. But quoting from my friend "u are only as rich as how much u spend". Wise words.

Now, I am a happy man, I just hope I can last till the last end of the month.

Ratatouille (Rat-a-too-tee)

Ratatouille: French.A traditional French Provençal stewed vegetable dish. The dish, originating in Nice, is fully named ratatouille niçoise.

A heart warming, funny animation movie on a rat's journey to fulfill his dream of being a cook. Telling us that everyone can realize our dreams.

Be sure to be in and seated on time, there is a short bonus clip, "LIFTED", which screens before show. It is darn funny.

A classic, this is the best show I had watched this year.

Ironic as it sounded, I wish there will not be sequel, I want it to remain as it is in my memory.

Ratings-
Entertainment: 4.5/5
Laughs: 3.5/5 (with LIFTED considered - 4/5)
Story: 4/5
Leaving the cinema with a smile on my face: 5/5 :)
Watched on 1 Sep 07, 7.50, The Cathay, AMK Hub

Doesn't matter you are young, old, kid, adult, gal, boy, I will recommend everyone to watch this . Definitely not to be missed.

Catch the trailers here.

Sex on the Drip

Sex on the Drip: A greenish alcoholic cocktail served in a IV drip hung on a drip stand @ The Clinic (NOTE: Tasted like cough syrup and cost SGD50)

L. high with Sex on the Drip

My army buddy Alan comes back for a visit from Holland. Met up to catch up last night. The gang had super big bowls of Ramen @ Waraku in Central for dinner, then chilled out @ The Clinic with kinky hospital deco (tell me a more suitable place for a bunch of medics?). Have a great time. Good to know everyone is doing well in their lives. Cya soon again, Alan!

Random Acts of Management

"Conversely, if you act randomly, reorganizing for no particular reason, promoting idiots, merging unrelated businesses, spinning off a few divisions - that looks like leadership. It's leadership for the simple that your employees never would have made those changes on their own. Later, when something lucky happens, you can take credit. If nothing lucky happens, call it a transition period"
- Creator of Dilbert (my idol), Scott Adams

Now that is what I call truth and wisdom.

Check out my comments on Goodreads. Enough said, you can find the book - Random Acts Of Management:A Dilbert Book by Scott Adams - in our local library, call sign - 658.00207 ADA

Green Efficiency

13 Aug 07 - Preparation
Period: 7.30AM - 6.30PM
Store - 1 hour
Lunch - 1 hour
Stone - 9 hours
Efficiency = 2 / 11 = 18.18%

17 Aug 07 - Drawing of Mobile Fantasy Getai
Attempt 1:
Draw 3, 2 Down
Efficiency = 1/3 = 33.33%
Attempt 2:
Draw 3, 1 Down
Efficiency = 2/3 = 66.66%
Overall Efficiency = 3/6 = 50%

Based on these facts, we have efficiency levels of 50% or less on both time/resource management and store logistics. I seriously think we need to do something about the situation...

Green Logistics

I have always wondered how the huge annual budget (from our faithful and loyal taxpayers no less) to the MoD is spent.

Till this day, they give no clear indications for that. During the annual budgeting session, our DM asked for more budget almost every year, but gave no clear indications on why... Just the standard answers like, "our security is important" :/
I meant isn't that always true? If so, why more budget this year?

Nevertheless, I do trust them, thus giving them a benefit of a doubt, I will safely presume that all the money is well spent. After all, these are probably sensitive and classified stuff, which average folks like me will not know.

One thing I am sure they DID NOT enough spend on is logistics. Recently, I have to put on my green uniform and go back for my rightful duties. The green uniform, by the way, has this magical effect where it can undo the evolution progress achieved by humans (I believe my IQ decrease by at least 20 when I wear it), turning us into slow, mindless zombies awaiting for the next command. But that is not that main point of this post, I will leave that to another day. Back to logistics, the night before I report in, I checked online to double confirm on the location, it wrote clearly - K camp. Cool... fine.... I know that place. The next morning, I was all geared up, woke up darn early and took a bus to K Camp. I waiting there for like 1 hour, I started to figure out that something is wrong for a simple reason - there isn't anyone else around! Lucky, I met another friend who was also there. After walking around aimlessly in vain around the camp for 30min and making several calls, we finally figured out that they got the place stated wrongly. It is at NS camp instead and we have to drag our sorry asses over. A total waste of time.

How on earth could our self-proclaimed 3rd Gen organization, world class force make such a mistake? I hope that they can improve in the area of logistics and coordination. After all, what good is it in having all the best equipment in the world, when you cannot properly deploy it, right?

Mayday! Mayday! PC Down! PC Down! A.G.A.I.N.

Last weekend I managed to fix by PC broken down earlier (Mayday! Mayday! PC Down! PC Down!) by installing Windows Vista. I cannot say Vista is great, there is lack of drivers for my mobo, it is sucking the power out of PC and it has the tendency of asking the same question over and over again - pretty stupid. More details on Vista another day. But hey it got my computer up. That is good enough for me, that was.

Little did I know that after 5 days after its resurrection, it died on me again. Last night, I started my PC, it started giving out funny beeps like some futuristic spaceship land, it cannot even boot pass the BIOS test – I know my mobo is gone….

Now you know why they say, happiness is short lived. LIFE SUCKS >.<

New Toy: Sony DR-BT21G Stereo Bluetooth Headset

After my purchase investment of my cool, new Dopod 810, I have a problem. The bundled handsfree that comes along with it sucks. It looks like some cheapo OEM that come out of a budget factory in China (probably that is exactly what it is). The ear place is too big, the build was rough, reminds me of the earphones that came with the walkman 20 years ago.

Influenced by 28D, I was chatting with 28D on his latest Creative bluetooth set, he got earlier in May. Yes, 28D, you are the cause of the evil little voice in my head that caused me to spend invest on this.

Was shopping in Marine Parade after my colleague's wedding there yesterday, there is a Sony showroom there. Finally, I saw something that fitted what I wanted - a bluetooth headset that allows me to listen to music and answer my mobile totally wirelessly. And the best part of it, it looks like a normal casual headset sans the wires. Being from Sony, the sound quality was great too. Took me a full 5minutes to decide whether to get it or not - I guess from this post you knew what was the decision.

Some cools features:
  • Totally wireless
  • Works as a headphone for music
  • Works as a handsfree set
  • Has 11 hours of playback; 100hours of talk time; 100hours of standby time
  • Looks cool
  • More info here

Okie time to enjoy more cool music on my new toys. ^~

P.S. This toy set me back by 159 bucks.

Mayday! Mayday! PC Down! PC Down!

Last Saturday, it was one sad day, my friend - the PC - had been sick.
He kept restarting again and again.

Did some diagnostic tests (spyware scan, virus scan) and gave it some treatments (registry clean up, scan disc) but nothing seems to come up or helped.

I concluded that it is due to some wrong registry settings and/or some mysterious out of the world malicious program invaded my PC.

So I decided it is about time to give it a new start.

On the lazy Sunday afternoon, I got my ass up and did a format of my C: drive. Then it happened. I could not successfully install the Windows (I had done reinstallation a few times). I tried to do the format again, it got worse - I could not even complete the format. After a few tries, I switched my ER tactic. I changed the installation HDD to another but still in vain.

Finally, I gave up for the day. But hey I have not give up yet.

Still I plan to save my PC.... Next operations on the list:
  • Try Windows Vista
  • Try to install by loading SATA drivers
  • Maybe (cross fingers) change the mobo

People out there, any ideas or suggestions how to save my PC? Please leave me a message.

Free DVD Rentals Delivered to You!

I was reading up the papers today.
There is this lift out for the "Great Singapore Sales 2007 - Part 3"
I hit upon a real, good deal! There is Singapore online DVD rental company and they are giving away 30-days unlimited DVD rentals trail period for FREE!

Okie. So it works like this:
  • Go to the HollywoodClicks Site (http://www.hollywoodclicks.com/)
  • Sign up for the trial and key in the promo code ("HP1MSM") for a 30 days trial, else I think you only get a 10-days trial
  • Browse through their catelog which have a pretty impressive collections of whatever DVDs you can think of (comedies, actions, drama, animation, series, etc etc)
  • Mark your interest on up to 50 DVDs in your Movie Queue
  • You can then prioritize the DVDs
  • They will call you to verify your address (tell them you got the promo code from the GSS07 paper)
  • Once they have 3 of your nominated DVDs, they will mail it to you
  • You watched it, then you mail back and wait for your next 3
  • Simple as that
  • They pretty fast too! I registered today and I am getting my first 3 DVDs mailed today. Though they are not my first 3 choices

Btw, I am getting:

  • Casino Royale
  • I'm A Cyborg, But That's Ok (Korean)
  • Thank You for Smoking (I always wanted to watch this)

So I am hoping to get the DVDs on Saturday and watching them for the weekend. Mail them back and wait for the next 3 :D I hope to get "200 Pounds Beauty" soon.

:)

New Toy - Dopod 810

On Sunday, I finally let go of my Sony Ericsson W800i which had been with me for near to 2 years. Did not go for the trade in option, as it really sucks. I got the phone for about SGD700+ then, its trade in worth now is 100 >.<

Dopod 810 - a PDA phone, along with a 2-years cooporate plan (really worth it), still playing around with it. Pretty happy with it so far, it has tonnes of cool features (even an in-built GPS!). Now I can have my Outlook calendar with me, and not trying to blast my head wondering when my next meeting is. :P

However, the purchase with the Green Star didn't really went too well. Firstly, the advertised promotion - Free Travel Kit, Home Theatre System and 1GB miniSD, is something like a hoax. All outlets do not have stock for 1GB miniSD and we will need to wait for 2 weeks - how dare they put it on the newspapers when they do not have stock! Secondly, the set that gave me has 1 CD missing. I call the customer support today and gave them a piece of my mind. I probably need to go down to collect again after they call back. DARN IT!

Guide to Office Politics

When you are at work, Have you wondered . . .
  • why the top management seems to be so clueless about everything?
  • why are there useless people at work?
  • how do they survive?
  • why do they still keep these useless people?
  • does the manager really need the work he/she ask you to do?
  • why worked so much and earn so little?
  • why your co-worker work so little and earn so much?
  • etc, etc

Welcome to the wonderful corporate world of warring office politics and (mostly) idiots.

Check out my new idol, he is Dilbert.

If you are as clueless as I am about what is going on at work, pick up this book, sit back, relax, have a laugh while you are studying the Dilbert art of office.

P.S. I borrowed the book from the 4th floor of Bishan Library. Reviews found here.

P.P.S. I really need to find the other Dilbert books, if you have it give me an email/ping.

1 Year on the Dark Side, the Client Side

1 year in my current company. Had been clearing leave since last Friday, since I cannot bring them over to the next contract term. Some of my thoughts:

  • Client side does not have much differences. You still work with someone, you still work for someone. Work in the end is still work
  • People here are not as happening and fun as in the agency
  • Surprised that processes are not well defined in a well known MNC
  • Red tapes are everywhere - 2 weeks for GO LIVE, how stupid is that?
  • Finally understood "gtg need to catch the shuttle" - being located at such an ulu place, you will rot if you try to venture via public transport
  • Different countries do have different styles of working

One thing I do not like is the last minute renewal of contract, today is the last day of my contract, yet, my boss only discussed with me about it last Wednesday! I do understand that he is busy and the HR screwed up. But I do not it is fair for employees, especially for us contractors, we are left in a limbo, whether to move on or not. It also portray an impression that you are not valued.

Sometimes, I wonder if I made the right move, afterall B does pay better, have better benefits and I am more like "a big fish in a small pool" rather than "a small fish in a big pool".

Looking back, I do have better exposure and travel opportunities (Hey, Romania - not many companies can beat that), I am taking on more complex projects (for better or worse) and having this entry on the CV will surely help. So yeah, no regrets.

Let's look forward to a better year ahead! ^^

Building a Civilization - Tigris n Euphrates

Ah Fu and his bro (FC) came over to my place for a boardgaming session. We are trying out Tigris n Euphrates.

The title placing game is about building up your civilization by gathering points the 4 corner stones of your empire.

Since we are all beginners at this game, we tool quite a long time to warm up to it. In the end, we only played 1 game - lasting 3.5 hours. It was fun, but the game ended in a 3-way tie which sucks - I meant 3.5hours later but no winner -_-

The game will probably be better if it is played with 4 players, which will speed up the pace of the game. Overall, a great game.

p.s. Tigris n Euphrates is the 2nd in ranking on BoardgameGeek Website.
